Sexy Book Review
The Sleepy Beauty Novels
By A.N. Roquelaure
This trilogy of erotic fiction was actually written by the legendary Anne Rice (who penned the popular pre-Twilight vampire chronicles Interview with the Vampire, etc.) in the 1980’s. A.N. was her pseudonym for only these three novels, which actually outsold Interview. At times they’ve been banned for their controversial content, which surely sparked the public’s interest further. And I hope this review sparks your interest, cause they are awesome.
I picked up the first of the trilogy at a used bookstore during an Anne Rice phase. I was about eighteen, and just starting to realize that I might be happiest on the kinkier side of life. The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty was a perfect outlet for further discovery. The books are chock full of sexy S&M scenes, with an appealing fairy tale plotline. I was hooked. Over the next couple years I was able to find the next two novels, and now they have a permanent place on the bookshelf next to my bed.
The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty starts out with a time-honored story we’re all familiar with. Beauty’s curse leaves her sleeping in a tower. She is rescued by a handsome Prince, and that’s where the similarities to a children’s story end. Instead of gently kissing the luscious princess awake, the Prince can’t help his desire and “thrusts his sex inside of her.” That wakes her up, you can be sure, and what follows is a long erotic tale with all sorts of creative plot twists. The Prince takes Beauty back to his kingdom, where she becomes a sex slave, along with many other supple and submissive Princes and Princesses from around this fantastical land. The slaves have to be naked all the time, and are punished for any minor transgression. Punishments range from simple spanking to humiliation to bondage, with everything in between. Beauty and her slave friends learn to love it, and everybody’s just bangin’ everybody else the whole time.
Beauty’s Punishment begins in a village where particularly naughty slaves are sent from the castle. Beauty and her buddy, Tristan, were caught fooling around in the wrong place at the wrong time, so now they are auctioned to become the property of more lowly and crass village folk. Scenes in this book occur in pubs, inns, stables, and the like. All very medieval, which you’ll love if you’re one of those Ren Faire types. The second book also introduces the “ponies,” men who have to dress up like ponies and haul carts and fuck each other. This will really make those into pony play super happy (not really my thing, but I respect it if it’s yours).
In Beauty’s Release, Beauty, Tristan and a couple other super hotties get kidnapped by some ambiguously Arabian raiders, and taken to their kingdom. The customs differ in this land, and the slaves are often painted and covered with fruit and stuff. There’s lots of harem time for Beauty, and Tristan fucks the Sultan. Bondage and beating abound. I won’t spoil the ending of the series, but I can safely assure you that everyone lives happily ever after.
These books are great reads for pretty much anyone who likes sex. Even the extremely vanilla could find something erotic in Sleeping Beauty; it’s just a book- it can’t actually hurt you! A.N. certainly knows how to cater to fetishists of all sorts, and you could learn about some practices you didn’t even know existed (I did). This series will spark ideas for the bedroom, or provide you with dog-eared pages to read alone in the bathtub. If you feel weird about how much this BDSM fantasy gets you off, remember: the series is more popular then Interview with the Vampire! Millions of people got off on the same sick stuff you did. Thank you very much, A.N.
Happy reading!
