Omaha the Cat Dancer
By Reed Waller and Kate Worley
A friend introduced this series to me during a discussion of our favorite comics. He’d found a few volumes of the collected series at a used book store, and he lent them to me. The story is about Omaha, an anthropomorphized cat who works as a stripper. The characters are all cats, dogs, birds, bears, etc. They may have tails, whickers, or feathers, but human-like bodies. Their adventures take place in a fictional Vegas-type city, replete with drugs, crime, and –best of all- sex. Yes, we, the readers, get to see lots of kinky sex scenes, which is what makes “Omaha” so unique.
“Omaha” is one of those things that you feel a little weird admitting that you like; the book’s main appeal is illustrated human/animal hybrids having sex. Yet, somehow, I was hooked right away. In previous writing, I’ve made it clear that bestiality does not get me off. Neither does the furry phenomenon (real people dressed in mascot-type animal costumes and fucking each other). So why is “Omaha” still awesome? I don’t know if I can fully justify my fandom, but here are the things that I like:
The story is original and exciting. Twists and turns, secrets and deceptions, mystery, politics, romance, music, “Omaha” has got it all. The complex world in which these creatures live is made all the more complicated by their sexual relationships. There are straight and gay couples, committed relationships, one-night-stands, and a healthy dose of threeways. Whereas another story may stop the moment the characters get to the bedroom, “Omaha” take us in bed with them, showing the love, lust, and betrayals in close-up.
The creative team of Worley and Waller started publishing the comics in the mid-1980’s, so the art has a delicious retro vibe that I love. Omaha’s got hair-sprayed curls two feet high, and the men wear mustaches and v-necks. There’s also a real feminist bent to the story; Omaha likes being an exotic dancer, and all the female characters are empowered, sex-positive, no-nonsense ladies.
Plus, it’s just sexy. Like I said, the characters are drawn with human-like bodies, with attention to detail. Yes, those details. They look like they’re having a lot of fun, they talk dirty, they masturbate. It’s the kind of sex I like to have. With real humans, that is.
So check out “Omaha The Cat Dancer” and let me know what you think!
