Gettin' Down in Chi-Town
 Word to Your Mother
In honor of the holiday, I thought it would be fitting to write a little something about my mother today. My mom has been incredibly supportive of my decisions regarding my love life, giving me a perfect mix of openness and privacy, when either one was what I needed. I thought a shout out was appropriate. In roughly chronological order…
My mom was very helpful in terms of my early education about the mysteries of life. She always answered my questions about sex and human development when I was a youngster, with no hint of reluctance or embarrassment. She helped shape my thinking that sex was natural and wonderful.
As teenagerhood approached, she gave me a copy of “Changing Bodies, Changing Lives” (an awesome book for adolescents, published by the writers of “Our Bodies, Our Selves”), which I pored over for answers to the more personal questions I didn’t want to ask another person.
When I started dating in high school, my mom took my to my first gyno appointment so I could get a birth-control prescription.
My mom had a phone conversation with my first boyfriend’s dad when we asked if we could sleep over at each other’s houses. Amazingly, they agreed that we could! No sneaking around was necessary when I was a teenager, which I think is rare for most American 17-year-olds.
She has always just been a phone call away throughout the years, talking me through fights, triumphs, and break ups with the people I’ve dated.
She barely batted an eye when I told her that I’d hooked up with girls.
I was super nervous to tell my mom that my longest relationship with a guy had been non-monogamous. When I finally did tell her, she didn’t completely understand it, but she didn’t get angry or weird. Instead, we’ve had very interesting conversations on the subject.
So, sappy as it sounds, my mom has been and continues to be awesome. I am unendingly grateful.
Happy Mother’s Day, everyone!

Xoxo, Lucy
